Yes. A custom refiner plate can often be developed without the original OEM drawing if the mill can provide dependable references such as machine details, photos, dimensions or a physical sample. The supplier should verify the mounting interface, review the refining geometry and obtain drawing approval before manufacturing.
Original drawings may be missing for older machines, equipment acquired second-hand or refiners that have been modified during their service life. Mills may also need an alternative source for replacement plates but cannot obtain complete OEM documentation. In these cases, a supplier needs to reconstruct the technical requirements from actual machine references.
The first step is to identify the equipment family and plate type. HUATAO's PAPER MILL REFINER PLATES and PAPERMAKING REFINER PLATES provide relevant product context.
A supplier can use a combination of the following:
· Machine nameplate, brand, model and refiner size.
· OEM part number or historical purchase record.
· Photos of both plate faces, side profile and installed position.
· Measured OD, ID, thickness, hole positions and locating features.
· A removed plate or sample for dimensional inspection.
· Operating data and the mill's current performance objective.
No single item is always sufficient. A machine model can narrow the search, but it may not reflect modifications. A sample reveals physical features, but wear can change the original dimensions. Multiple references should be cross-checked.
Confirm the outside and inside diameters, plate thickness or height, bolt-hole count and coordinates, locating slots, center features and contact surfaces. Identify rotor and stator parts separately. Confirm installation orientation and any left/right or segment-position differences where applicable.
Record bar width, height, angle, groove depth, groove direction and segment arrangement. The bar pattern should be evaluated in relation to the refiner design and pulp furnish. Avoid selecting a pattern solely because it looks similar in a photograph.
Material choice should reflect abrasion, corrosion, contaminants and operating conditions. Ask for the proposed material description and agree on supporting documents or inspection requirements. Do not assume that one alloy or hardness is correct for every mill.

Refiner plates are not simply mechanical replacement parts. Their geometry interacts with fiber type, furnish composition, consistency, throughput, operating speed, refining gap and energy load. Recycled furnish may contain contaminants and filler that affect wear and refining behavior; virgin pulp may have different fiber-development objectives. The supplier should understand the actual process before recommending a change.
See FACTORS AFFECTING REFINING PULP QUALITY for process factors relevant to the technical discussion. For machine-family identification, ANDRITZ REFINER PLATES can serve as a reference, but exact interchangeability must be confirmed against the installed machine.
Custom refiner plates can be developed without OEM drawings when the project is based on verified references, engineering review and buyer-approved documentation. HUATAO welcomes machine details, photos and samples for a preliminary feasibility assessment.
